Understanding Hair Fall in Women: Symptoms, Causes, and Effective Treatments

Updated: Nov 17, 2023

Hair loss is a common concern for women, affecting their physical appearance and emotional well-being. While some hair loss is a natural part of the growth cycle, excessive hair loss can be distressing. This blog will explore the symptoms, causes, and treatments for hair loss in women, shedding light on the different phases of hair growth and fall. Additionally, we'll investigate the efficacy of popular oils and treatments that claim to combat hair loss.

The Hair Growth Cycle

Before delving into the intricacies of hair fall, it's essential to understand the hair growth cycle. Hair growth occurs in three phases:

1. Anagen Phase (Growth): This is the active phase where hair cells divide rapidly, and the hair shaft grows. This phase can last anywhere from two to seven years.

2. Catagen Phase (Transition): A brief transitional phase follows the anagen phase, lasting about two weeks. During this time, hair growth stops, and the hair follicle shrinks.

3. Telogen Phase (Resting and Shedding): The telogen phase lasts about three months and is the resting phase. During this period, the hair is released from the follicle and sheds. Approximately 10-15% of hair is in this phase at any given time.

Symptoms of Hair Fall in Women

1. Increased Hair on Pillow or in Shower Drain: One of the early signs of hair fall is noticing more hair than usual on your pillow or in the shower drain. On average, 50-100 strands of hair fall is normal

2. Thinning of Hair: Progressive thinning, especially around the crown or part, is a common symptom.

3. Visible Bald Spots: In some cases, women may have bald scalp spots and thinning hair.

Causes of Hair Fall in Women

Several factors contribute to hair fall in women, including:

1. Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can lead to hair loss.

2. Genetics: A family history of hair loss can increase the risk of experiencing hair fall.

3. Nutritional Deficiencies: Inadequate intake of essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and vitamin D can contribute to hair loss.

4. Stress and Illness: Physical or emotional stress and certain illnesses and medications can trigger hair fall.

Effective Treatments for Hair Fall

1. Topical Minoxidil: Topical minoxidil (MX) alone has limited efficacy for female pattern hair loss (FPHL). Combining it with other therapies is expected to yield better results. MX regulates potassium channels, causing vasodilation. This extends the anagen phase, induces angiogenesis around hair follicles, and helps convert miniaturized hairs into terminal hairs. Although MX is the only FDA-approved drug for FPHL, its overall effectiveness is low. Refer.

2. Prescription Medications: Medications like finasteride may be prescribed to block the effects of hormones contributing to hair loss. Due to its effectiveness in a significant number of users, finasteride is frequently the initial recommendation for individuals seeking treatment for male pattern baldness, often prioritized over over-the-counter options like minoxidil. Use only if prescribed by doctor.

3. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: PRP involves injecting a concentrated form of the patient's blood into the scalp to stimulate hair growth. Plasma derivatives, widely used in orthopedics and sports medicine, are also effective in promoting hair growth when combined with microneedling and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.

4. Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC): An alternative to PRP is said to be popular these days. Growth Factor Concentrate Therapy or GFC treatment is a highly safe, dedicated, concentrated growth factor preparation from the candidate's blood cells to offer superior natural results. Blood Platelets are enriched with various growth factors. However, more research with a good sample size has to be done to prove its efficacy. Check Studies

5. Lifestyle Changes: Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management, can positively impact hair health.

Oils and other treatments:

The market is flooded with potions and treatments claiming miraculous effects on hair growth. While some oils, such as coconut, argan, and castor oil, may provide moisture, their ability to reverse hair loss is often exaggerated. The scalp may feel slightly painful when touched.

Research on the efficacy of these oils for hair growth is limited, and individual results may vary as every individual is different. It's crucial to approach such treatments with a realistic perspective, understanding that a holistic approach, including medical intervention and lifestyle changes, is often necessary for significant and sustained results.

Let's explore the benefits of rosemary oil, Redensyl, Anagain, and Procapil-based serums in addressing hair fall:

1. Rosemary Oil:

- How it helps: Rosemary oil has been a traditional remedy for hair health. It is believed to stimulate blood circulation in the scalp, promoting hair growth. Additionally, rosemary oil may strengthen hair, preventing breakage and reducing hair loss. However, research on rosemary oil vs minoxidil has found similar results.

- Research: Limited studies suggest that rosemary oil can improve hair thickness and promote hair growth, making it a popular natural remedy for combating hair fall.

2. Redensyl:

- How it helps: Redensyl is a patented blend of active ingredients that targets hair follicle stem cells. It aims to activate the hair follicles, promoting hair growth and reducing hair loss.

- Research: Some studies have indicated that Redensyl may increase the number of hair follicles in the anagen (growth) phase, making it a promising ingredient in hair loss formulations.

3. Anagain:

- How it helps: Anagain is derived from organic pea sprouts and is designed to stimulate specific molecules in the hair follicles, prolonging the anagen phase and promoting hair growth.

- Research: Preliminary research suggests that Anagain may help improve hair density and reduce hair loss by promoting the regeneration of hair follicles.

4. Procapil:

- How it helps: Procapil combines biotinoyl tripeptide-1, oleanolic acid, and apigenin. It targets the leading causes of hair loss by improving blood circulation in the scalp, reducing inflammation, and preventing follicle aging.

- Research: Studies have indicated that Procapil may positively impact hair growth by reducing the production of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a hormone linked to hair loss, and by promoting blood flow to the hair follicles.

When incorporated into serums, these ingredients collaborate to offer a comprehensive approach to promoting hair health. Applying serums directly to the scalp ensures targeted delivery of active ingredients, potentially enhancing overall scalp health, strengthening hair, and fostering an environment conducive to hair growth through regular use. Additionally, considering the body's overall health, including nutritional factors and lifestyle choices, remains crucial in addressing hair fall comprehensively.

Diet:

Indeed, a proper diet plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health, and it can significantly impact hair fall and growth. Here's how a well-balanced diet can contribute to healthy hair:

1. Protein-Rich Foods:

- Importance: Hair is primarily composed of a protein called keratin. Consuming adequate protein is essential for promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss.

- Sources: Include lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts, and seeds in your diet.

2. Iron-Rich Foods:

- Importance: Iron is vital for producing hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the cells, including hair follicles. Iron deficiency can lead to hair loss.

- Sources: Incorporate iron-rich foods such as spinach, lentils, beans, red meat, and fortified cereals into your meals.

3. Vitamins and Minerals:

- Importance: Several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin B9(Folic Acid), vitamin E, vitamin D, and zinc, contribute to hair health. These nutrients support the hair growth cycle and help prevent hair loss.

- Sources: Include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts in your diet to ensure a broad spectrum of essential vitamins and minerals.

4. Omega-3 Fatty Acids:

- Sources: Incorporate fatty fish (like salmon and mackerel), flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts into your diet.

5. Hydration:

- Importance: Proper hydration is essential for overall health, including the health of your hair. Water helps in keeping hair strands moisturized and prevents brittleness.

- Recommendation: Aim to drink at least eight glasses (64 ounces) of water daily.

6. Biotin:

- Importance: Biotin, also known as vitamin H, is a member of the B complex group of vitamins essential for healthy hair. It is often included in supplements targeted for hair health.

- Sources: Biotin is found in foods like eggs, nuts, whole grains, and certain vegetables.

7. Avoid Crash Diets:

- Importance: Sudden and extreme changes in diet can result in nutrient deficiencies and adverse effects on hair's overall health, such as hair loss. It's essential to maintain a balanced and sustainable eating plan.

- Recommendation: Consult with a healthcare professional or nutritionist before significantly changing your diet.

8. Limit Processed Foods and Sugar:

- Importance: Diets high in processed foods and sugar can contribute to inflammation, negatively impacting hair health.

- Recommendation: Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods and limit the intake of processed and sugary snacks.

Hair fall in women is a multifaceted issue with various contributing factors. Understanding the phases of hair growth, recognizing symptoms, and addressing the root causes are essential steps in managing and treating hair loss. While some treatments show promise, it's crucial to approach hyped oils and treatments cautiously, relying on evidence-based solutions for the most effective results. Consultation with a healthcare professional or dermatologist is recommended for personalized advice and treatment plans tailored to individual needs.
